Willie Jones Eats Poppy Seeds

Willie Jones Eats Poppy Seeds
and wiles the hours away.
Willie Jones eats poppy seeds
when he’s supposed to play.

Willie Jones is only six
and he has yet to know
of other children’s games and tricks
beyond the garden row.

Willie Jones gets up each morn
and greets the bright new day
with lowered eyes and thoughts forlorn
then eats and runs away.

Willie Jones eats poppy seeds.
(His mother doesn’t know.)
Willie Jones eats poppy seeds
beside the garden row.

Willie Jones eats breakfast home,
then disappears till lunch.
His eyes from then till supper roam
on poppies in a bunch.

Willie Jones is filled with joy
until the morning after,
for big thoughts soar this little boy
till his head hits the rafter.

Willie Jones eats poppy seeds
and whiles the hours away.
Willie Jones eats poppy seeds
when he’s supposed to play.
