The Poetry of
Jack Scott

Stomach Love

Light digests the night
as birds grind softer things
that they have swallowed
with harder things
they’ve swallowed after.

In reality,
things that go bump in the night
have less and smoother teeth
than creatures of the day.

Once past that grinding grit
worn smooth enough for solace
happiness is nourishment,
welcomed with relief at any hour.

All need help digesting things
they did not intend to swallow.
